The Different Types of Aster (Photos)
The Aster is a plant that some gardeners often mistake for the common daisy. However, they are very different plants and have 180 varieties of Asters to choose from! Some grow in zones three through eight giving these flowers an incredible range across Eurasia. The Aster is a plant that blooms in late-Summer to Fall.
This impressive flower provides gardeners with an attractive, fall color while also holding the ability to delightfully scent their gardens during this time of year when not much else will be blooming for them.
Grunder (Aster amellus)
The daisy-like flowers of the Aster Amellus or Grunder are sprays of violet-blue petals around a yellow central portion that make this variety different. This flower stands at two feet set it apart from other varieties and its vivid colors make for an eye catching display in any garden setting. The Grunder flower is a fast-growing variety that needs to be separated every three or four years. The plants typically grow up to two and half feet tall, with some specimens growing as large as 2 by 3 ft in diameter!
This beautiful plant has many common names including Italian Aster, Purple Crown Daisy, Besom Daisy and Red King Protea because of its origins in Italy where it was commonly used for gardens beds.
Harrington’s Pink (Aster novae-angliae)
In New England, this plant is known as the “Harrington’s Pink” and it has large clusters of flowers that come in a light pink color. Each flower reaches up to 1 inch wide with slender petals around a yellow center.
The Harrington’s Pink grows between four-six feet tall and two feet wide which earned them an award from the Royal Horticultural Society based on their quality for being hardy perennials able to withstand cold winters while thriving well in dry heat climates like California too!
Purple Dome (Aster novae-angliae)
