11 Plants That Thrive in Shade and Dry Climates

It is known that every plant requires a special attention when it comes to taking care of them.

There are also many solutions to grow a plant even in dry climates by the plant being covered in a shade where the soil is able to remain moist. The advantage of covered plants is that they are protected from sun damage.

Best Shade Plants for Dry Climates

There are plenty of options to grow plants in dry climates. Plants that can grow in dry climates are known for their drought tolerance so when you start your research for plants that have high drought tolerance  you will come across many plants that can also grow in shade. The options are endless.

  1. Hosta

These plants are low maintenance and can adapt to any climate. They cover a variety of colors and sizes and their flowers last for only a few weeks each season.  They best grow in moist soil but because they are very adaptable they can survive even in a dry environment.

  1. Daffodil

Daffodil’s are spring plants that have vibrant flowers that come as a great asset to your garden. They grow best in a sunny environment but they can also bloom even when they are planted in areas where there is mostly shade. Daffodils grow most in the three through nine zones and come in yellow, white and orange color, and they also prefer dryer soil rather than moist.

  1. Foxglove

Foxglove has a flower in a bell-like shape and comes in white, purple and pink. They grow best in the four through nine areas and the best prefer more sunny areas but can also grow flowers in a partly sunny area. They can be provided in dry soils as long as it has water on a regular basis.

  1. Lungwort

These plants can handle a full sunny and full shade area and they also have tolerance for cold weather. Their flower colors come in blue, pink and white and their planting area is two through eight.

  1. Bleeding Heart

These are heart shaped flowers that are great for dry climates. They come in red, pink and white and they best bloom in shaded areas and are also great for attracting birds and butterflies. The best grow in a three through to nine area and can be planted right after the frost. 

  1. Foamflower

These flowers come only in two shades and are great to grow in either shade or partly sunny areas and can also grow in dry climates. In dry soil they grow slowly and don’t spread as much as they do in moist areas. The best growing area for these flowers is three and nine.

  1. Vinca

These tropical flowers come in red, purple, pink and white and are highly drought tolerant but however they are less likely to bloom in areas with little watering. The planting area for these flowers is from zone two to zone eleven and they won’t come back the next season, meaning they need to be replanted.

  1. Coral bells

These flowers come every season and they are great to attract hummingbirds. They can grow in shade and also in a full sunny area. Dry areas are not a problem for them as long as they are watered enough and their planting area is three through nine.

  1. Bigroot Geranium

Best area to plant these plants is three through eight and they prefer well drained soil and rich nutrients. These flowers can grow in any place giving you a lot of options.

  1. Ferns

Only hard ferns can grow in dry climates but they can grow well in shade and partial shade locations. Ferns are easy shade plants to grow in the ground, even in a dry climate.

  1. Hellebore

Hellebore or Christmas flowers are best known to grow in a shady and dry area. They are mostly in white but they can be seen in cream, yellow, green, red and purple. These are highly poisonous and can be harmful to kids or animals. The growing area for these plants is four through nine.
